Emeralds can be found in various places around the world, such as:
North America
- Yukon, Canada
- North Carolina, USA (The North Carolina mountains are the only place in the US where emeralds can be found. My dad and I have visited the Crabtree Emerald Mine and we actually found some small emeralds. The trip was a lot of fun, and I would recommend spending a weekend there if you have the time. If you would like to take a visit, more information is available here.)
- Colombia (the finest emeralds in the world are found here)
- Brazil
- Norway
- Austria
- Egypt (the first emerald mine was created here under the rule of Cleopatra)
- Zambia
- Zimbabwe
- Mozambique
- Madagascar
- Ural Mountains, Russia
- Pakistan
- Afghanistan
- India
- Yunnan Province, China
- Emeralds are typically found a couple hundred feet beneath the Earth's surface in small veins.
- They most often occur in individual pockets within these veins of metamorphic rock.
- Common minerals that accompany emerald are black tourmaline and mica schist.
